The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Wednesday, January 16, 2013:  Dave and Jean Schaeffer along with Mark and Paula headed east to Hilo, Hawaii.  Along the way, they stopped to see and smell the orchids.

There is a thing in Hawaii about women wearing flowers in their hair.  If it is by the left ear, it means she is taken.  If it is placed by the right ear, she is single.  If it is in the back, it means, "follow me, no questions asked!"

Plants and flowers of all kinds do well in this tropical environment.  The smells were terrific as well.

Mark was driving.  Paula yelled, "Pull over here, there is a candy factory along the road. It wasn't long before Paula was purchasing Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Shortbread Cookies.

She even brought some back to Brainerd.  More on that later.

Workers hand dip cookies in caramel and dark chocolate.  It doesn't get much better than this.

Then it was off to the Imiloa Astronomy Center where they marveled at a mosaic of many thousands of tiles telling the story of the island creation by way of volcanoes.

The tour guide, a native Hawaiian, was a fun and informative person.

Very educational.

Jean and Chef Paula can't pass up a farmers market without buying something good to eat.

The locals sure know how to prepare good tasting food.

The way you get a botanical garden is to have rainfall.

This day was no exception.

However, it must have rained less than 1/10th inch over the two hours that the crew was there.

With rain comes waterfalls.

A beautiful sight and smell experience.

Even the parrots liked it.  Colorful birds.
The botanical garden is along the seashore.

There is a place where the road comes to an end.  This is the spot on the northeast coast of Hawaii.

It is several hundred feet down to the ocean too.

Then sunset came through palm trees.  A fitting end to a full day.

Stay tuned for more from Hawaii.

Quote of the day:  This is a tropical paradise.   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
