The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Tuesday, January 15, 2013:  Mark and Paula along with Jean Schaeffer headed south of Kona along the black lava shoreline.
Yes, it really was black sand on the beach.

Then they headed to Volcano National Park at Volcano, Hawaii.

Steam was rising that day from the volcano, but no lava flows were seen.

Photos in park headquarters showed fire and eruptions of the past.

Then it was off to a 10 to 12 foot tall and 200 foot long underground tube where lava once flowed.

What kept going through Mark's mind was the possibility of another lava eruption that might want to use the tube again!

Jean, Paula and Mark found very nice accommodations in the Kilauea Lodge at Volcano.

They sat around a nice fire in the main gathering room because it reminded them of Gilbert Lodge in Brainerd.

It smelled great too.

This is a quality place with great accommodations.
Paula liked the place because they had cats.  Mark liked the room keys marked with Hawaiian names.  Yes, each room has a number and a name.

Dave Schaeffer caught up with the group just in time for dinner.

Everyone was quite pleased with the fare at the lodge restaurant.

The difficult part was deciding which dessert to order.

It all looked soooo good and tasted even better.

No one would admit which one he or she chose.

There is no solving this mystery.  They ate the evidence!

More to come on this adventure in Hawaii.

Quote of the day:  Glad the volcano did not erupt big time during our stay.   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
