Mark and Paula rang in the new year watching Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians on Youtube on a smart TV.
New Years Day
Chef Paula decided to make Mama's Hoppin' John.  This is a slow cooker.  The longer the better.

Ingredients include ham hocks, black eyed peas,  tomatoes, onion, celery, long-grain white rice and bay leaves.
Yes, it takes all day in a crockpot.

So, Paula headed out with snowshoes to get exercise while seeing Gilbert Lake.

She brought Mark along, but he was having a problem getting the hang of it!

Plenty of fishermen with kids on the lake.  Catch anything?

Hoppin John was ready at the end of the afternoon.
Paula baked bread and pulled the hamhock bones out.  Nice Christmas plates, Paula!

Very good.  It took just a bit of Tobasco to add spice.  This is a southern stick-to-your-ribs dish.

All of this while a fire is going on in the Grand Fireplace.

Quote of the day:    Happy New Year.  Stay positive and test negative!  Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
