Mark and Paula stayed overnight at the South Pier Inn next to the Aerial Bridge in Duluth, Minnesota. They like the place with its cozy rooms and a great view of the Duluth harbor.The place recently won an award as the best motel in Minnesota under 50 rooms. |
A light shown from one pier at the
Aerial Bridge just
before sunrise. A U.S. Coast Guard ice breaker was out that morning clearing the way for ship traffic. Yes, this was a cold and difficult winter. |
|
Mark and Paula attended a hamfest in Superior, Wisconsin, were
amateur radio equipment is bought and sold. Mark was first licensed as an amateur radio operator as WN0AXD in 1963 at the age of 16. This equipment reminded him of some radios from back then. Mark couldn't pass up the opportunity to show off his Zenith Long Distance Radio shirt. Zenith built premium quality consumer radios from 1918 to 1999 employing some 976 employees at its peak. |
Chef Paula stopped at a Super One store to pickup
some Arco brand
Norseman Grog coffee. She and Mark really like the stuff. They toured the factory a while back too. Gilbert Lodge serves only Arco coffee. |

Then it was out to the Poplar
River on the south shore of Lake Superior. It empties into the lake after going by the family cabin about a quarter mile upstream.
|
||
There were huge piles of driftwood on the shore.
It is great for making a camp fire. The wood is bleached white from floating on the lake and crackles or pops when burned. |
||
Mark remembers putting driftwood into a small wooden boat powered
by a one-horse outboard motor when he was a kid. That was a 60 or more years ago. The wood was used at the family cabin in its fireplace. Great memories.
|
||
Photos of Mark in 1951 at this
same location when he was just 4 years old. He had brown hair and skinny legs back then. |
||
The memories poured back. He was a handsome kid. |
