Friday September 27, 2013: Mark and Paula traveled to the south shore of Lake Superior, east of Superior, Wisconsin. Why were they there? What is this that they came across? |
|
|
Hmmm...Mark remembers this as the
family cabin from many many years ago. It was built by three doctors in the 1920's, then sold to Mark's father in the 1930's. Mark remembers it during the first seven years of his life before the family moved to Ely, Minnesota, in 1959. |

|
Yes, it is still there. Paula
liked the fireplace with the Spruce Lodge sign painted on the front. Mark's brother Richard owns the cabin now and did a lot of restoration including getting the fireplace standing straight again. It had been leaning a bit as time went by. |
|
|
Floors in the cabin lean too as the
years take their toll. The front porch, looking toward the water, was probably planned to lean away from the cabin to shed water, but it is sagging more than intended. Floor boards are getting a bit creaky too. This cabin has seen better days. |

Paula was down by the water with her smart phone trying to get a signal
to determine where the heck she was. This location is almost in the middle of nowhere some 30 miles east of Superior. The cabin is near a small river that feeds into the south shore of Lake Superior. |

Mark sat on the front steps
remembering his childhood and the times he spent here.
That was 54 or more years ago. No electricity, no running water, but there is still an outhouse! The cabin is still here, but he and the world have changed. |
Quote of the day: It was good to rediscover a part of my past. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
