Friday September 27, 2013: Mark and Paula visited the Arco Coffee factory in Superior, Wisconsin. Arco, a "Northland Tradition since 1916," is run by third-generation president Donald Andresen. A good-natured fellow, he showed Mark and Paula around explaining the coffee business. |

Paula was fascinated to learn how
green coffee beans are roasted to become the coffee we know. Mark remembered when everyone could smell coffee being roasted in downtown Duluth. Those days are gone because the Environmental Protection Agency now requires an "afterburner" to clean the air as it is exhausted from the roasters. What a shame! |

Darlene is one of 20 employees who work at Arco. She is often found in the packaging department carefully weighing coffee in each bag. Darlene has been with the company for 12 years and is also apparently a Minnesota Vikings football fan, judging by her hat. |

Any time is coffee time! Mark enjoyed seeing the Tasting Room where coffees and blends are sampled to assure quality. Arco has a loyal customer base. It is common to see people drive up to the factory to claim bags of coffee that they ordered for pickup.

Back at Gilbert Lodge the next morning,
Chef Paula was busy preparing
coffee.
Mark likes more French vanilla creamer in his coffee than Paula does. Both like the Norseman Grog blend. Gilbert Lodge proudly serves Arco coffee to its guests. |
Quote of the day: We sure learned about coffee from this experience. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
