Sunday, August 26, 2012: Paula headed to Emily, Minnesota, to see Gertrude "Aunt Gert" Brockelbank's cabin on Little Trout Lake. Paula spent many happy times there when she was in grade school. She started by contacting the people who now own the cabin and showed them her pictures of the cabin from the early 1960's. They are Laura and Doug Leckband and mother Peg. |
|
|
The cabin was sold after Gert died in the mid 60's to a dentist and his wife. That's why you see "The Cavity" sign over the door. |
|
|
Paula's father Chester helped build this cabin for his Aunt Gert in about 1948. The red lap siding was changed, the wood box is gone and they put in a block foundation but basically the cabin has not changed since it was built. |

|
Yes, that was Aunt Gert. She is remembered by Paula as someone who could cook anything. If you brought her a rabbit or turtle, there would be mighty good eating that night. The cabin location is shown on a water stained map. It even smells like a cabin inside. |
All the usual things you would expect to find in a cabin
including a sign for visitors, fishing gear, a lake fishing map, wood stove, and
a hand operated water pump. Paula showed a photo of brother Bruce holding
a fish that he and Paula caught back in 1960. Good tasting too. |
A view of the lake from the window. Paula found much of the
original furniture just as it was in 1960. No electricity and yes,
an outhouse! |
There is the old boat in a photo from back then and how it is now...resting on the shore after all those years. |
Quote of the day: There is a lot to be learned by visiting the past. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
