Sunday, October 9, 2011: Mark and Paula headed west for the day and stopped at Vining, Minnesota, where there are a number of interesting creations to see in Vining Sculpture Park. They were done by Glen Nyberg. This one is of his daughter, Astronaut Karen Nyberg. | ||
Mark once spent a week at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, some 20 years ago learning to fly the U. S. Space Shuttle. Yes, it is not just for kids. Space Camp is for adults who sometimes feel like they are kids. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Mark. He also had brown hair back then. |
Paula always liked watermelon so this sculpture appealed to her the most. |
Then they were off to nearby Inspiration Peak. This trail leads to the hilltop some 400 feet above average terrain. Good thing they brought their hiking boots. |
The view at the top was pretty good in spite of the somewhat cloudy weather. It is the highest point in central Minnesota, towering some 1750 feet above sea level. It is part of Lake Carlos State Park. |
Along with way, they ran into this squirrel which was as interested in them as Mark and Paula were in it, |
The Dynamic Duo then traveled to Phelps Mill. This historic place was busy milling grain from 1889 to 1931. Now it is a historic park. Funny how things change. There is an annual festival there on the second weekend each July. |
Here is a closer look at the waterfall on the dam. |
On the way back to Brainerd, they discovered this witch having a bad day. Ouch! Probably had this mishap while practicing for the upcoming Halloween night. |
Quote of the day: You never know what you are going to run into nowadays. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
