Sunday, September 11, 2011: It was the tenth anniversary of
9-11
when 2996 people died in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania from terrorist
attacks. Some 411 emergency workers, mostly firemen, died in the process
of rescuing people from the twin towers in New York. In perfect weather, flags flew at half staff at Fire Station #1 in Brainerd on September 11, 2011. Out front is a bronze statue of a fireman and a bell, which was rung twice during the remembrance event. |
A military color guard paraded down the street to the fire hall. A crowd of several hundred gathered to see the ceremony. |
Firemen walked a huge American flag to a ladder truck.
To the left and on the roof of the fire hall was Kelly Humphrey, a photographer from the Brainerd Dispatch newspaper. |
The flag was then raised for all to see. |
Prayers were read and speeches were given reminding everyone of the significance of 9-11 and how it changed America along with the world. |
A bagpipe was played along with taps.
There was a 21 gun salute as well. A picture on the memorial service program was entitled, The Day the Angels Cried. A stirring tribute to firemen and others on that fateful day. |
There was a high-speed low-altitude flyover of the North Ambulance helicopter. An awesome sight. |
After the ceremony was all over, this fireman posed with a motorcycle while remembering the day. The motorcycle has fire department markings. |
Quote of the day: Let us not forget 9-11. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
