Saturday, August 27, 2011: The Pioneer Woman cooking show debuted on the Food Network starring Ree Drummond. Ree is pronounced Re and the show airs Saturdays at 11:30 AM Eastern/10:30 AM Central time. She did a great job on the show and has an excellent blog about ranch life in Oklahoma at http://thepioneerwoman.com |
Mark toured an historical mine area on the Cuyuna Range near Crosby, Minnesota. This is where iron ore was mined underground from 1916 to 1934 and above ground until the 1970's. |
The tour guide was Richard Smook, of Crosby. He has been relating historical information to visitors for the past 22 years. Richard is extremely well informed about mining in the area and is very talkative. If you visit, you will walk away knowing a lot more than when you arrived. |
One of the exhibits showed drilling through rock in an underground mine tunnel. |
Mark was seen pushing a mine car filled with iron ore. |
The ore here is a fine dust. Back when it was being removed from the ground. it was more like mud because of underground water. |
Here is a mine rock, which contains asbestos, hematite, and manganese. |
There was also a remembrance for miners who died when lake water broke into and drowned 41 miners in the Milford underground mine in 1924. |
Quote of the day: There is history all around us. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
