May 30, 2010:   Hundreds of people assembled for pre-Memorial Day ceremonies and festivities, held at Cragun's Resort on Gull Lake, not far from Brainerd, MN.  This photo shows just half of them.

A color guard was present for a 21-gun salute.

Retired U. S. Army General John Vessey Jr. was the keynote speaker.  He is a WWII veteran and has held every rank in the army over the years.  General Vessey reminded the gathering that the day was a tribute to all living veterans.  The upcoming Memorial Day honors those who have fought and died for their country,  A local man, he served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington at one time.

Later at Gilbert Lodge, Chef Paula prepared tuna salad with sweet corn, grapes, and rye break topped with butter.

It is the eve of Memorial Day.  The American Flag flies proudly at Gilbert Lodge, lit at night.  As the song, God Bless America goes, "Stand beside her, and guide her, thru the night, with a light from above."
