The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Thursday, November 11, 2010:  It was Veterans Day in the United States.  Two local WWII veterans were honored in a ceremony at the Brainerd High School in front of a standing room only audience for their conspicuous bravery in Europe.  They were Orris Aldrich and Harvey Rusco.  Both were named Knights of the Legion of Honor, which is the highest honor bestowed by France, for their contribution to the liberation of France during the war.

Some of the music was provided by the Brainerd High School A Cappella Choir.

The guest speaker was James Bronkema, who is a highly decorated hero.  Bronkema is a Native American and a U. S. Navy Seal.  He said, "This is the one day where we are all one nation regardless of our political affiliation."  He received a standing ovation after his one-hour speech.

There was more music, this time by the Brainerd High School Symphonic Band.  This drummer was quite intent on getting it right.

The Brainerd High School Chamber Orchestra also played.  All of the music was excellent.

(l-r) Mark and Paula went out to lunch with Teresa and Paul Hirst on this Veterans Day.  Mark served a year in Viet-Nam with the U. S. Army and Paul was in the Army National Guard more recently.

That night, Mark, Paula, and Paula's dad Chet dined at Famous Dave's Restaurant.  Mark and Chet's meal were compliments of Famous Dave on this Veteran's Day.  Chet served every day of World War II in the U. S. Navy.

Applebee's Restaurant was also serving a free meal to veterans that day.

Dave and Kim of Brainerd, MN, called to say "thanks" for Mark's service to our country.

Mark from Bemidji, MN, e-mailed, "On this Veteran's Day, I just wanted to say Thank You!"

Quote of the day:  Serving in the military is a commitment to our country.   Mark < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
