Friday, January 7,
2022:
Mark and Paula left Brainerd on a -33 degree morning and headed to
Duluth where it was -15. With clear skies and cold temperatures,
there was ice fog under the
Aerial Bridge.
The shipping season was still open and the bridge was waiting for ships
to come in.
Then a faint image appeared over Lake Superior, coming out of a cloud bank
to the northeast.
It was a ship emerging from the
fog.
In she came.
It was the Interlake flagship
Paul R. Tregurtha.
Built in Lorain, Ohio,
in 1981, she has a 17,120 horse engine. At
just over 1000 feet in
length, the cargo capacity is 68,000 gross tons of taconite or coal.
This ship is affectionatly called the "Queen of the Lakes." Ice hung
everywhere as she came in with ice on her bow.
In she came.
Sailors were glad
to wave at land lubbers.
She is huge and flies the American Flag.
