Wednesday, November 28, 2018: Galena,
IL, has one of the homes of American Civil War General
Ulysses S. Grant. A statue of his wife Julia is seen looking out over the town of Galena waiting for her husband to return. |
Grant commanded northern forces and is depicted in battle in this
painting. |
Busts of Grant and President Abraham Lincoln are seen in a museum in
Galena. Grant accepted the surrender of southern General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox in 1865, ending the American Civil War. He later became the 18th president of the United States. |
The Grant home goes back to the 1870's and is preserved today as it was
back then. It gets about 8000 visitors per year. |
This is a grand piano of the era, not like what we think of as a grand
piano today. |
The dining area with fine china. They lived well. |
