C-47 Skytrain, sometimes referred to as the Dakota. Designed and built
by Douglas Aircraft in the 1930s as the
DC-3
airliner, it saw extensive service in WWII. Over 10,000 were built for the military. |

Dick Cole, last of Doolittle's Raiders. Dick was co-pilot in Jimmy
Doolittle's B-25, which bombed Tokyo on April 18, 1942. Dick went on to pilot C-47s in "the hump" transporting cargo over the Himalayan Mountains between India and China. The pilot on the right flew C-47 gunships called Puff the Magic Dragon, Spooky or Ghost Riders in Vietnam. |
