Friday, November 10, 2017: Veterans
Day ceremonies were held at the Brainerd High School. Flags were handed out, compliments of Fleet Farm in Brainerd. |
Lots of smiling faces that day. |
The
Honor Guard from the Brainerd
American Legion,
VFW, and
DAV was there to present
the colors. |
The
Brainerd High School combined 9-12 grade choirs, Chamber Orchestra, and Wind
Symphony performed. |
Dr.
Robert Uppgaard, from Pequot Lakes, Minnesota, was the main speaker.
The 94 year old veteran was a
Seabee in World War Two. Seabees are the U.S. Navy's construction
force. Uppgaard told about taking a part in setting up the
Mulberry Harbour, just after D-Day at Normandy. France, in 1944 to aid the
Allied invasion of Europe. Their motto, "The difficult we do immediately,
the impossible takes a a little longer." |
The
local chapter of Quilts of
Honor chapter presented hand-made quilts to seven World War II veterans at
the ceremony. Shown receiving one was Herb Thiesse of Brainerd, a WWII U.S. Army veteran. He is a retired farmer now. |
Everyone
applauded their service. |
Dr.
Uppgaard was thanked by Kathy Hegstrom, head of decorations for the event. |
Many students took flags with them on the way back to class in the school. |
Quote of the day: Nicely done. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
