Saturday, November 11, 2017:
Construction on the revised All Veterans Memorial in Brainerd proceeded in unseasonably cold and bitter weather.
It was far enough along so dedication ceremonies could be held the next day, Veterans Day.

The weather improved to be just above freezing on Veterans Day.  People were in awe of the revisions.

A camera crew from television channels 9 and 22 was there to interview Dave Meyer and others.
See that interview at: https://lptv.org/community-spotlight-all-veterans-memorial-updated-in-brainerd/
Mr. Meyer is Commander of the Disabled American Veterans in Crow Wing County.
On the right, Honor Guard member Matt Gingenbach brought the flag.

Ladies from the VFW Auxiliary were there too.  Time for a salute from a long retired veteran.

A crowd showed up in 30 degree, but mostly clear weather for the dedication ceremony.

The Honor Guard from the Brainerd American Legion, VFW, and DAV was there to give a 21 gun salute.

U.S. Army veteran Dick Ashmun and U.S. Navy veteran Mike Williams saluted as taps were played.
The revision brings the memorial up to date honoring all veterans living and dead across American history and into the future.

Koreann Martin sang the National Anthem and God Bless America.  She is a very talented young lady.

The keynote speaker was Buford Johnson, a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran.
He told the group how important it is to have servicemen and women serving our country in war and peace.
Each of those people is giving of themselves to our country.

Ms. Martin also played the piano.  Part of it was a medley of armed forces songs.  Nicely done.

Brainerd VFW Commander Chip Borle was very pleased at what he saw.
The significance of Veterans Day is the signing of a peace treaty, ending World War One, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Quote of the day:    I am very happy to see this update become a reality.   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
