Wednesday, December 7, 2016:  Long time friend Shane Toven from Laramie, Wyoming, stopped in to visit.  While at Gilbert Lodge, he used the Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) station to talk to radio operators in Colorado and Florida. These, and other contacts, were on 20 meters (about 14 MHz) and 40 meters (about 7 MHz).  Shane's FCC issued call sign is K0SDT.  The Federal Communications Commission does not sell licenses or just give them out.  Every person wishing to be licensed must pass federal exams to qualify for a license.  Mark's call sign is W0MH and Paula's is W0HA.  You'll see that on their car license plates.

Shane's contacts that day were with 400 watts of transmitter power.  Mark talked to stations in Russia, Japan, Australia, England, Ireland, and many other countries from his car with just 100 watts of power.

Amateur Radio is a fascinating hobby shared by 700,000 people in this country and twice that number internationally.  Learn more at: http://www.arrl.org

A wall in the Amateur Radio room displays just a few of the many QSL (confirmation of contact) cards from around the world.  Licensed amateurs are invited to use the station when visiting Gilbert Lodge.   Those without licenses are allowed to speak into a microphone while a control operator is running the equipment.

Quote of the day:    Ham Radio is a fun hobby.   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
