Friday, October 14, 2016:
Mark and Paula woke up in Red Wing, Minnesota. The morning started out with a cup of coffee and a Pumpkin Pie Spice creamer. Mark loved it. Red Wing is will known for Red Wing shoes and boots. See a video here. There is a Red Wing shoe store on Highway 61 between Bush and Plum Streets for everyone to see. |
Red Wing as viewed from high on a bluff. You can see the Mississippi River
winds through town. |
|
The
Red Wing Stoneware
and Pottery Company was giving tours that day. It was a great
opportunity to see how pottery is made. The company started in 1861 and has been making pottery ever since. This worker is fashioning wet clay on a spinning table. |
|
Friendly folks, hand-making pottery......often times coffee
cups and mugs. It is an art and the people there are craftsmen. |
|
Every piece is carefully trimmed and inspected to make sure it
is just right. |
|
Then the maker's mark goes on very precisely. Nicely
done, it shows pride in workmanship. |
|
Clay pieces are carefully put in a rack on tracks that then
goes into a kiln for firing. |
|
They are glazed, baked again, and finally show up on shelves
for sale. Items in the shape of the state of Minnesota are especially popular in this place. |
|
Red Wing Stoneware also makes ceramic items on contract for
many companies.
You might already have one. |
Quote of the day: Great to see Americans making a living working with their hands. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
