Saturday
September 26, 2015:
Mark and Paula headed for
Mount Rushmore,
near Keystone, South Dakota. A spectacular sight. It is our Shrine
of Democracy. |
|
Visitors are welcomed by flags of all 50 states as they walk
in. There is a path around the monument with great views too. |
|
They followed the path and found a museum where the original
statue model is housed. Measurements were made frequently on the model and
transferred to the monument while Mount Rushmore was under construction starting
back in the 1927. The actual monument is 12 times the size of the model.
One inch equals one foot.
Mark and Paula posed to get their photo with the monument in the background. |
Mount Rushmore was beautifully lit that evening, but first
there was a program with a flag lowering ceremony. |
Military service veterans from the audience were asked to go
onstage for the flag lowering ceremony. A microphone was passed down the
line. Each one gave his name and a little about his service to our
country. Nicely done. |
This was not a rehearsed ceremony.
Veterans did what they knew to do in properly folding the flag, then
presented it to a National Park Ranger. Well done, guys! |
A parting shot after dark. An image to be remembered. |
There's a sign post up ahead. That might be a clue to where the Dynamic Duo is headed next. |
Quote of the day: Quite an event to behold. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
