Friday,
September 25, 2015:
Mark and Paula noticed cowboys coming out of the hills. |
|
They seemed to be on some kind of mission.
Yes, they were gathering for the 50th Annual Buffalo Roundup,
sometimes called the Buffalo Run, at Custer State Park in South Dakota. |
This is a place where you find real cowboys and their horses. |
Some 15,000 people showed up to see
the event. Photographers with long lenses were there waiting for
the show to begin. |
Buffalo came roaring over the hills
just after 11 that morning. Some
were not to happy about the proceedings. |
Cowboys on horseback herded them.
This is dirty work as the animal hooves stir up a lot of dust. |
Not an easy task.
A buffalo might weigh in at 1400 pounds. An adult horse is 1100
pounds plus rider. |
Then there was a break-out. In
fact, it happened twice when the lead cow turned back and the herd
followed. |
Off to the hills they went, but were finally
turned back. |
Finally the critters were sent in the
right direction. |
|
Half of the
spectators were on the far hill. The other half on this side. |
|
In total,
some 1300 buffalo were rounded up to the delight of everyone, including
the cowboys. |
|
In the buffalo corrals,
this bison posed for a photograph.
|
|
Cowboys were applauded by the crowd for a job well done. Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam.... |
Hmmmm, who is this guy? Where is the Dynamic Duo headed now? |
Quote of the day: Quite an event to behold. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
