The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Wednesday, September 23, 2015:  Mark and Paula went to Lead (pronounced leed), South Dakota, to see the Homestake Mine.  It is the largest open pit gold mine in the world. Over its productive lifetime, the mine, with underground tunnels, produced 40 million troy ounces of gold before closing in 2002.

A nearby underground mine reached 6800 feet below the surface with 370 miles of tunnels.  An amazing feat of man!
Today, some underground tunnels are used for basic scientific research
Workers were doing upgrades that day to one of the two huge electric elevator motors.
Mark appreciated seeing this.  He is an electrical and mechanical minded guy.

Beautiful scenery in the hills north and west of Rapid City.

More landscape with rises that are almost vertical.

Laughing water brooks too.

Then Paula had to stop at a chocolate shop to say hi to her friends The Chipmunks.

(l-r) Simon, Theodore, and Alvin.   Alvin!!!

Mark and Paula spent the night in Deadwood, South Dakota.  It is known for being a wild town, at least it was in its past.

This lady shopper had no less than three dogs.  Very interesting.

Then Paula had great fun reading a Remember When book from the year she was born...1954.
Mark enjoyed seeing Marilyn Monroe.  The sign above says, "Party Like There's No Tomorrow!"

When Paula was just a girl, she had many friends including two she had not seen in 54 years.  Jill on the left and Debbie on the right.  They connected on Facebook and had to relive old times....which they did that night.
Paula is the one on the far left in the black and white photo.  Jill is the one behind the birthday cake and Debbie is the one on the far right.

Yes, Deadwood, South Dakota, is an interesting place with an old wild west heritage.

There's another signpost up ahead.

Hmmm....what kind of trouble are the Dynamic Duo going to get into this time?

Quote of the day:    More fun on the road.   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
