The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Thursday, July 23, 2015:

Lots of patriotic people show up at Oshkosh.

Advanced aviation technology is often seen first in military designs.

Lots of aerobatics that day.

Can you imagine formation flying almost straight down?

This B-25 Mitchell bomber was painted for D-Day in Europe June 6, 1944.
The three white stripes made our aircraft easily distinguishable from enemy planes on that fateful day when Allies invaded France.
D-Day was the beginning of the end of World War II.

The Voyager is exhibited in the EAA Museum.  You will remember it was the first and only aircraft to circle the Earth without refueling in 1986.

Pilot Dick Rutan handled the controls most of the time.  The co-pilot was Jeana Yeager.

The flight took four days, 11 hours, and 44 minutes.  Neither one slept much during the ordeal.

Dick was photographed with Mark during a group discussion about the flight.

The photo above is of Dick's brother Burt, designer of the plane.  A video of the Voyager at take-off was playing on the screen behind Burt.

One display that drew quite a bit of interest was this Grumman OV-1 Mohawk high-tech surveillance aircraft that saw extensive service from 1959 to 1992 with the U.S. Army.  Mark was the Sergeant in charge of an Avionics repair shop to keep em' flying in Vietnam.  Now retired from military service, Mohawks are in the hands of collectors who proudly show them off.  This particular Mohawk has the names of all missing in action and prisoners of war in Vietnam.  One by one the names have been marked accordingly as remains are identified.  The vast majority are still unaccounted for.

Quote of the day:    Drink responsibly.   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
