Monday,
May 25, 2015: It was a rainy day. Brainerd Memorial
Day ceremonies were moved to the Brainerd National Guard Armory. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts were there to set up chairs while presenters discussed procedures for the event. Then the Brainerd High School Band arrived. |
|
Plenty of patriotic people on hand. |
Walt Strakka is the last remaining local survivor of the
Bataan Death March in World War II. |
|
A Color Guard from local veterans
organizations was there too. |
|
All seats were filled and there was
hardly any standing room left for this event. |
|
Many speeches were given. Much
of it was photographed by Steve Kohls from the Brainerd Dispatch
newspaper. He is very good at what he does. |
|
Sgt. 1st Class Joe Porisch of the
National Guard was the guest speaker that day. He told how each grave marker represents a person and a story of service to country. Sgt. Porisch said, "By remembering them, we carry forward their mission and their cause." |
|
The 100+ member Brainerd High School Band was there and did an excellent job including playing Taps with an "echo" by a second trumpet. Very stirring. |
Quote of the day: Memorial Day is a day of remembrance. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
