Sunday,
January 18, 2015: Mark and Paula found
themselves at the Key West Cemetery. The center of attraction there is a memorial to those who died aboard the USS Maine in 1898. The ship exploded in Havana Harbor and set off a war with Spain in Cuba. The battle cry was, "Remember the Maine." A sailor looks out to sea for possible survivors of the tragedy that killed 260 men. |
This cemetery is also know for
interesting inscriptions on gravestones such as you see above. |

The most humorous one is on the right. |
Then it was on to the Ernest Hemingway home and museum in Key West. This Nobel Prize winning author lived 1899 to 1961 and wrote seven novels and much more. |
This is Hemmingway's
writing room where he hammered out his books on a manual
typewriter. That was before the days of computers. He was an adventurer who loved fishing and hunting, living life to its fullest. He was married four times and loved six-toed cats, of which there are about 50 at the estate. Hemingway covered World War I and World War II as a correspondent, injured several times. His is best know for his books which include, For Whom the Bell Tolls, A Farewell to Arms, and The Old Man and the Sea. |
To learn more of the Hemingway history, Mark
and Paula headed to
Sloppy Joe's Restaurant where Hemingway was
seen frequently years ago. Specialty of the place is a Sloppy Joe, not a surprise, but good tasting. Plenty of loud music too...in the middle of the day. |
Quote of the day: I wonder if Sloppy Joes and loud music are the secret to being a good writer. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
