Mark and Paula
visited the famous
Coral Castle on South Dixie Highway 1 near Homestead, Florida. You might have seen a television documentary about the mystery surrounding this place. Mark posed alongside a life-size likeness of Edward "Ed" Leedskalnin, the creator of Coral Castle. Ed was born in Latvia in 1887 and spent much of his life earning a living by showing visitors this place until his death in 1951. What amazes everyone the most is how Ed created his castle and grounds by carving and moving tons of coral rock without the aid of machinery. He was just over five feet tall and weighed only 100 pounds. |
This place continues
to be a tourist attraction with visitors from around the world. |
The tour guide, on the left, explained the massive
weight of the coral stones and the mystery surrounding how Ed might have
moved them into place. |
Ed carved a hole in a pyramid rock in such a way that you can
see the north star through the cross-hairs in the rock pillar behind. Those structures weigh many tons. Lots of unusual shapes at this place. Coral Castle is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. |
This sun clock shows 11:30 AM
and can tell the date too. Hard to believe a man with
almost no education did this. |
Paula liked the coral chair. She didn't try to move it though. |
Quote of the day: A man's home is his castle. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
