Saturday,
November 15, 2014: Mysterious lines appeared in the lake ice, much like lines on the planet Mars, which many people in the late 1800s and early 1900s believed were canals. Actually these lines came from water pushing up through cracks in the ice. Who knows, maybe Martians are looking down and thinking there are canals on Gilbert lake! |
There was hoarfrost this morning too. Ten degree
air crystallized water vapor out of the air, depositing it on objects
everywhere. |
Tower climber Mark donned
his cold weather gear and braved the 15 degree temperature with 7 degree wind chill to climb the 65 foot communications tower that day. What was he doing? Mark was attaching a Christmas star at the top. This is an annual tradition. This is dangerous work. Don't try this at home! |
|
Ace ground crew Paula was helping by
attaching a line to the star, then three strings of lights. There she is, the red dot in the center of the left photo and again on the right. |
The lights were tested before Mark climbed down from the
tower. There is a view of a neighbor's home across the street too. |
The star is lit at night for all the world
to see. Star lights twinkle while the streamers are steady. It will be turned on evenings Thanksgiving through Christmas. The address is 10032 Island Drive, Brainerd. Yes, Christmas is coming. Santa has no excuse not to stop at Gilbert Lodge this year with this kind of sky marker.
