8, 2013: The Dynamic Duo of Mark and Paula Persons was up at
2:45 AM to catch a 4:30 AM
Lakes Express
shuttle bus to the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport. The trip was to celebrate a wedding anniversary. They had been there on their honeymoon 35 years ago. |
They took off over the snowy cold of Minnesota. After a stop in
Salt Lake City, Utah, they continued west catching a final glimpse of
the west coast of California as they ventured out over the vast Pacific
Ocean. In-flight entertainment included the movie Airplane! They were entertained by the movie Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe on their flight to Hawaii some 35 years ago. Great comedy. Airspeed was 559 miles per hour with a 73 mile per hour headwind and a temperature of -66 degrees F at 34,000 feet. |

After 6 hours over water,
islands started to appear. Then a rainbow was spotted as they
landed at Honolulu International Airport on Oahu in the Hawaiian islands. |
They were welcomed with a big Aloha to the land of Hawaii Five-O and presented with leis from a Hawaiian. It was an exciting time. The Hawaiian islands are the most isolated islands on Earth. It is a 6 hour or more plane ride from anywhere to Hawaii. Tourism is the #1 industry in Hawaii. About 75% of the population of the Hawaiian islands lives on Oahu. Only 25% reside on the many other nearby islands, some of them larger than Oahu.

Then it was important to learn some Hawaiian. Wahine (wä-h, -n) is for women and Kane (kä'-n) is for men. Very important lest an embarrassing mistake might be made. |
Soon it was time for some good food from the
International Marketplace after the long flights. Paula is big
on things like that. Yes, there were quite a few Japanese tourists on the island. Thanks to Michelle Underland at Traveler's Fare for making travel arrangements for Mark and Paula. This blog will attempt to showcase some of the 1900 photographs that Mark and Paula took while on this trip to paradise. Stay tuned for more pages. |
