Friday, November 23, 2012: Black Friday. Mark and Paula were up at 4 AM to see the crazy shoppers looking for bargains. They didn't buy much, but others took quite a bit home. The weather cleared later in the morning after 1 inch of snow blanketed the landscape. A shadow of Gilbert Lodge lay over it as you can see while gazing north. Interestingly, Gilbert Lake had frozen-over back on November 14th, but warm weather melted it since. |
Then Mark and Paula were off to Aitkin, Minnesota, for the annual Fish
House Parade. It started out years ago as a way to draw people to Aitkin at the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. All the promoters could think of as an attraction was to parade fish houses down main street. Later it became much more drawing people from long distances. There was some light snow falling during the parade, but almost no one paid any attention. Minnesota and snow go together like ham and eggs in the winter. |
Santa showed up on a
snowmobile. Even Jason Davis from Channel 5 Television in the Twin
Cities was there. |
Even A vintage Aitkin Fire
Department truck was there along with a young pirate. |
A very good looking snowmobile trail groomer.
Aitkin is portrayed as a riverboat town although the Mississippi River isn't
quite big enough for that kind of activity there. |
Even The
Kixters were there showing off as were some hillbillies. Great
entertainment. |
Then there were the Elvis look-alikes. Lots of fun. |
Finally it was the parade entry that everyone had been waiting for. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause came by to the cheers of everyone. |
Quote of the day: A fun annual event...even with mid-twenty degree temperatures. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
