The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

The Oshkosh, Wisconsin, control tower is the world's busiest tower in the world for one week a year.
Wednesday, July 25, 2012:  Mark met and got a signed copy of his show program by Dick Rutan, one of the two pilots who who spent nine days in the Voyager airplane circumnavigating the world in 1986.  That historic flight was without stopping and on just one tank of fuel.  The other pilot was Jeana Yeager.

Rutan is a retired U.S. Air Force pilot who flew combat missions in Vietnam.

The Voyager was designed by Burt Rutan, Dick's brother, and is on display in the EAA Museum for all to see.

The flight is described as "The last first in atmospheric flight."

Next to the Wright Flyer, it is the most famous home-built aircraft in history.

During the construction, the project accepted public donations including $2 from a man who wrote, "Don't laugh, I didn't get lunch today."

The A U.S. Air Force F-4 Phantom from the Vietnam era.
Many people watched in awe as a Piper J-3 Cub flew acrobatics and then landed on a truck.

It took a couple of tries, but finally succeeded in doing it.

There seemed to be no end of planes trailing smoke and doing aerobatics.
The crowd was fascinated.
WOW...don't try that at home.
Watch it...you could get hurt!
Formation flying is no easy thing.
They came in low with lights on.  An awesome sight.
The crowd cheered as the flag was brought down from overhead and the Star Spangled Banner was played.

August 18, 2012 e-mail:  Nice pictures Mark, glad you enjoyed the show.  Steve in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Quote of the day:  What a show!   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
