Banded butterfly fish on the left as seen by Paula in the waters off Roatan. |
A sand dollar was having a great time out there. |
She even found conch shells. |
E-mail from Deep Diver Paula: First dive was at El Aquila (the Eagle in Spanish) was a wreck from 1997. Saw lots of very large groupers and a nice spotted eel peeking out from inside the wreck at about 110 ft down. Saw my first crab of the trip and he was taking a walk. Seeing lots of Spotted drum fish which swim in a figure eight so just about impossible to photograph. Margaret pointed out a purple/lavender colored sand dollar toward the end of the dive. I learned they are purple while alive and when they dive then they are white.Second dive was to Butchers Bank and we dropped right down on a couple a beautiful Gray Angelfish which I really love to watch. Saw one on the third dive today which was huge. Larger than a dinner plate. Of course, too far down to go after to take a photo of. Beautiful coral on the second dive and more of a sand bottom than I have seen in the past. Not nearly as much broken coral on the bottom of the ocean floor. It is amazing the number of fish in such a small area. You think there is nothing there and if you stop and observe, that blank spot is just covered with activity. You just have to open your eyes and look. Second dive saw a nice eagle ray. (channel clinging crab on the left) |
Came to shore for lunch of fried chicken, potato salad, rice and tortillas. Had a soda that tasted like a banana popsicle. Third dive of the day was to Octopus Acres. Saw way too many lion fish on this site but it was my favorite of the day. Burr Fish, juvenile drum, turtle in the distance. Found a lobster and seeing lots of French grunt fish. However, they have yet to smile so I can take a descent photo. The store was open today so picked up water and orange juice. Looking forward to breakfast at the dive shop. A local woman is coming to make us banana pancakes. Hear they will be excellent. Tonight hope to get to a Rotisserie Chicken place. Have to go early cause they run out. Otherwise, there are a number of places to check out. Had rain through most of the day but just overcast now. Had lunch in the rain and the road was a mess. They had graded it before we walked back at 4:00 PM. Love you and hope all is well. xxxooo Paula (spotted drum juvenile on the left) |
There's a spotted eel again. Seems to be a reoccurring theme in this adventure. |
Quote of the day: Paula would be happy being stranded on a tropical isle. Mark Just 19 days until St. Patrick's Day. | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
