29, 2011:
Brainerd's famous water tower stands at the intersection of
Washington and South Sixth Streets in the heart of Brainerd.
Completed in 1922, this concrete structure is on the U.S. National
Registry of Historic Places. Just 100 feet south is where
Burlington Northern Railroad
tracks go east and west through town as they have since about 1870.

Trains are seen coming through town at all hours day and night. Their horns remind residents that, "this is home." |
There is a model railroad club that is associated with
the Lakes Area Senior Activity Center. What is different here is
that the club meets at the Westgate mall in a storefront. Find it
just west of Herbergers on the north side of the mall. Club
visiting hours are 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM on the first and third Tuesdays of each
month and 7 PM to 9 PM on the second Tuesday.
Loyal Hyatt is the engineer setting a train back on the rails in this photo. His number is 218-330-3941. You can also try 218-270-0001. They say that railroading is a real "toot!" |
