The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Sunday, August 7, 2011: Mark and Paula toured the Charles A. Lindbergh Historic Site.

Charles Lindbergh is probably best known for being the first person to fly an airplane non-stop from New York to Paris.  It happened in 1927 and really got commercial aviation going in this country and around the world.  Lindbergh was 25 years old at the time.

Mark is seen here in a replica of "The Spirit of St. Louis."  The plane cruised at 100 to 110 miles per hour and was powered by a 9-cylinder radial Wright R-790 (J-5 Whirlwind) engine, which was capable of producing 223 horsepower.  The engine performed flawlessly during the epic 40 hour flight.

What an exciting time that must have been back then spurring the imaginations for so many people!

Tour guide for the grounds and the Lindbergh boyhood home was Gary Block.  He had many informative stories to tell about Charles and his family.
The home served as a farm when it was built early in the 1900's.  Charles Lindbergh learned a lot of practical things while farming, which he applied throughout his life.
The parlor was an interesting place with live and phonograph music.
This is the Saxon car which 14 year old Charles drove to California from Little Falls with relatives aboard.  The trip took 40 days one way.  Must have been quite an experience.

Quote of the day:  There is always plenty to learn from our history.  Mark < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
