Saturday, July 23, 2011: The annual Crosslake Boat Show was held on a 76 degree day. Thousands showed up to show their restored wooden boats and to see others. |
Scram is 26 ft Hutchinson, built in 1931 with a straight-eight Chrysler engine. It has a 6-volt electrical system. That is a big engine to start with a battery of that low voltage. |
These boats are not inexpensive so it might take someone's inheritance to pay for one. |
Mark liked this Chris Craft runabout with a vertical fin tail.
It must be really fast. Mark is also showing off his boating shirt. |
Who could pass up a German bratwurst sandwich with sauerkraut and
mustard? Answer: Mark couldn't! Careful, don't spill any of that mustard on yourself. |
(l-r) Mike Balfe of Minneapolis and Jim Mandel of West St. Paul, Minnesota, both own Flying Scott boats. They were manufactured between 1961 and 1963 and were very revolutionary in their design. Mark remembers when his family owned one years ago. They are a 17 foot fiberglass boat with a tilt-up windshield and ladder to come aboard from the water. With a 75 horse Scott outboard motor, it topped out at about 28 miles per hour. A bit slow by today's standards, but fabulous at the time. |
Quote of the day: You can never go to too many antique boat shows. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
