Saturday, May 14, 2011: The Dynamic Duo of Mark and Paula traveled west toward Rapid City, North Dakota. Along the way they stopped at Highmore, South Dakota, and ran into Joe Thorpe of the Diamond Joe Ranch in Pierre. Joe loves horses and loves showing them off. |
A restroom at the local gas station had this inscription on the men's room door. |
Deer were seen along Highway 14. They like the green spring grass. |
Great faces, great places. The Rapid City/Black Hills area is probably known for the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which is also on the travel list for the Dynamic Duo. |
Mark stopped at Ellsworth Air Force Base where he saw many antique airplanes such as this B-29 Bomber from World War II. Dubbed the "Superfortress," this plane was designed and built during the war. It was a huge undertaking and was the plane that dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, to end the war. |
The B-52 Stratofortress was built just after World War II and is still flying today. |
Mark is standing near the landing gear of a B-1B Bomber. This is no small airplane. See below: |

The B-1B on display at Ellsworth Air Force Base. A very impressive sight. Where do the Dynamic Duo travel next? Stay tuned for the next exciting adventure. |
There is another signpost up ahead. What exciting ride awaits the Dynamic Duo? Stay tuned for the next adventure. |
