August 26, 2010: Professional Welder Jeremy Knippel invited a few people over in the evening to see his hobby. Jeremy is a blacksmith. Many people think smithing is a lost art. There are still just a few good smiths around who turn out beautiful custom work. Jeremy is one of them. Here he is with a floor lamp of antique design that he carefully crafted in his shop. Jeremy is a craftsman with some artist mixed in. |
The peanut gallery of onlookers that night included (back l-r) Greta and her mother Karen Engen, Kirsten and Newell Hirst. In the front row were your friendly residents of Gilbert Lodge, Mark and Paula Persons. |
Jeremy got his forge going with coke made from coal. |
Starting with an iron rod, he worked with a 2.5 pound hammer and formed the metal to the delight of the attentive audience. |
Detail was added with a smaller hammer putting veins in the object, which will be a leaf. |
At the end of the leaf, he drew the metal rod thin and then put a turn in the end. |
The leaf turned out exceptionally with about an hour of work. |
Some of Jeremy's humor is found in these forgings. |
How about a broom with a forged handle? |
This knife was made of two pieces of metal that were
forged (pounded) together. That work, in essence, welded the two metals
together. In total, there are 75 layers of extremely thin metal in this
knife, which Jeremy made.
Great stuff!
