The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

July 24, 2010:  The annual Crosslake Chain Antique and Wood Boat Rendezvous was held in great summer weather at Moonlight Bay.  Thousands convened to see restored boats from a bygone era.

One of the craft was a 1941 Falls Flyer with a four-cylinder Evenrude 33 horsepower outboard motor.  Pretty progressive for the time.

Dave Thomson, skipper of the Rio Rita offered a bottle to Mark for the occasion.  The Rio is 24 ft long and was built in 1927 with a Pierce Arrow engine.  Great stuff.

Here is the Royaleze from 1929.  At 36 feet, it is a real classic.  Imagine that, a wood boat at age 81.

Before heading home, Mark stopped at a gathering of model train buffs in Crosslake.  It was the annual get together and public display of the Northern Trackers Railroad Club.  Several organizations were represented.

Frank Nelson of Morris, MN, is an avid member of the Alexandria Model Railroad Association.  If it runs on rails, he wants to be a part of it.

They say that railroading is a real "toot."

At supper time, Chef Paula made her famous Spam Omelet.  Yes, that is right, the meat in there is spam.  Not bad tasting once you try it.  Trivia:  Hawaiians eat more spam per capita than anywhere else in the world.

After the evening meal, it was out on Gilbert Lake to see a lucky fisherman pull in a small bass.

Quote of the day:  There is always plenty at or near Gilbert Lodge to see and do.    Mark < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
