The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

June 26 and 27, 2010:  The Great Minnesota Air Show was held in St. Cloud, MN.  Attendance reportedly exceeded 70 thousand people over the two day event.  Mark was there on Saturday, the 26th and loved every minute of it.
The U. S. Marine Corps brought in an MV22B Osprey.  This remarkable aircraft can take off and land vertically while having the ability to fly like a fixed wing airplane.  Impressive!   Here is a military AC47, which was flown by the U. S. Air Force as a "Spooky."  Used mostly in Vietnam, they were gunships to aid troops on the ground and were sometimes called "Puff the Magic Dragon."

Duggy, the "Smile in the Sky."  It is a Douglas DC-3, which was developed as an airliner in the mid-1930's.  Many were in use into the 1970's as commuter airlines in this country.         Spookeys (photo above) had three six-barrel MXU-470 Miniguns, which would shoot 6000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition per minute.  That is 18,000 rounds per minute total.  An awesome weapon in time of war.

One of Mark's favorite airplanes.  It is the B-25 Mitchell bomber from the 1930's.  This one is named "Miss Mitchell."

There is a lot of history here.  See photo and text to the right.

Seventeen of these planes took off from an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean to bomb Tokyo, Japan, just 4 months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in 1941.  The raid was told in the movie Thirty Seconds over Tokyo starring Spencer Tracy as Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle.
Mark was interviewed on radio stations WJON and KZRV Radio, which were covering the event live.  The interview host was WJON News Director Jim Maurice.

Mark related some WWII aviation history to listeners.

There were many precision flying acts that day.

Even a daredevil woman wing walker showed off for the spectators.     A jet-powered truck streaked by at nearly 350 miles per hour.  It has a 12,000 horsepower engine.  WOW...what a thrill.

It was a good day for flying.  Many other planes including the F-22 Raptor were there for everyone to see.    The U. S. Navy Blue Angels precision flying team was the highlight of the show.

Quote of the day:  Summer and air shows just go together.  Mark < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
