Saturday, October 9, 2010: A crew of three men from Consolidated Telecommunications Company came to Gilbert Lodge to install a new fiber cable for the Internet. The cable is 7/15" (just less than 1/2") in diameter. You can see the actual fibers sticking out of the cable. They are tiny in comparison to the rest of the cable. |
Crew Foreman Kevin Thorson shows one of the tools to get the fiber buried. It was an air-powered hammer drill called a "mole" that pushed/pulled itself along underground. The mole can only go 30 feet at a time and is used to cross under difficult areas like a walkway. |
Here it is the mole coming through to a hole at the far end of its run. |
Most of the cable burying was done with a vibrating plow. It slits the earth while it goes along. |
Here it is in the ground vibrating its way along. |
Not all of the work could be done by machine. There was plenty of digging too. The work will be worth it in the end. Stay tuned for an upcoming adventure where it will be connected. |
Quote of the day: Fiber offers almost unlimited possibilities for high speed data. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
