Monday, May 27, 2019:  Memorial Day in Brainerd, Minnesota honoring those who gave their lives for our country.
The Legion/VFW/DAV Honor Guard turned out to pay their respects.
The Brainerd Fire department put up a huge flag near the Laurel Street Bridge where one of the ceremonies was held.
Bataan Death March survivor Walt Straka placed a wreath at the Brainerd National Guard Armory.
He is the last remaining one.  Half of the 64 soldiers from Brainerd were killed by their Japanese captors.
A parade headed up 3rd Avenue NE.
The Brainerd High Marching Band was part of it.
Ceremonies were held at Evergreen Cemetery.
The main speaker was Bob Nelson, a veteran of 27 years in the U.S. Army.  He told how important it is to serve our country.
Serena Schreifels, Miss Minnesota of the United States 2019, recited the poem, In Flanders Fields.
This photo shows about 1/3rd of those in attendance that day.

Quote of the day:    Honor our war dead.   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
