Monday, May 28, 2018:  Memorial Day.  A thunderstorm quit just in time for people to come put.
Ceremonies for Memorial Day started at 8:30 am on the Laurel Street Bridge over the Mississippi River in Brainerd.

VFW Auxiliary members looked on as members of the Marine Corps League put a wreath in the Mississippi River.
They did this in remembrance of those who died at sea.

The firing squad from the local Honor Guard fired a 21 gun salute.

Taps were played while flags were raised at the All Veterans Memorial.

The American Legion Riders saluted during ceremonies at the Brainerd National Guard Armory.
The last Bataan Death March survivor Walt Straka was honored.

A parade headed north on 3rd Avenue In Brainerd to Evergreen Cemetery.

The band followed.

Ceremonies started with a big salute.

Eagle Scout Chris Boucher recited the Gettysburg Address.

Brainerd Mayor Ed Menk told how important it is to remember veterans who died in defense of our country.
Tim Bray told of his experiences serving in Iraq and of the friends he lost.

Combat wounded in Vietnam, Steven Rosenow told of his experiences in Vietnam.
Tears where shed while Brainerd City Council member Jan Lambert read the words to the song, "Ragged Old Flag."

Brainerd VFW Commander Chip Borle is an Iraq veteran too.
This was an emotional presentation that affected most in the audience.

A small sample of the crowd that day.

Ladies from the VFW, Marine Corps League and Order of the Purple Heart were there to give comfort to each other.
Everyone was please at how the ceremony turned out.

It was time to reflect on the day and sacrifices of the one million who gave their lives for our county.

Cooks were busy at the Brainerd American Legion making lunch.

Friends encouraged each other while food was being served.

People smiled because lunch at the Legion was good.

Quote of the day:    Memorial Day renews my spirit in America.   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
