Saturday, September 30, 2017:
A U.S. Army Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter was demonstrated to the public at Camp Ripley, near Little Falls, MN. UH-60 replaced the aging UH-1 Iroquois, but best known as the Huey, helicopter that Mark is very familiar with. He was a U.S. Army Sergeant in Vietnam from April 1968 to April 1969. |
Mark was one of the luck ones to get a ride in the bird over Camp Ripley that
day. The weather was good so no one became air sick. Mark loved it. |
The crew helmet reminded Mark of Stormtroopers in the movie
Star Wars. Passengers were taking selfies to remember the event. |
The Black Hawk flew over the populated part of Camp Ripley
before heading out to see more of the 53,000 acres. |
The camp has a wild life refuge and recreational area, much to
the surprise of many who visit. |
They flew over training sites where soldiers practice tactics
in and around buildings. None of that was going on this day. |
There are some old military tanks that have been used for
target practice. |
|
Another training area with real world
situations. Camp Ripley is a premier training facility for military from across the country and our nation's allies around the world. |
The Black Hawk pilot knew his business. He expertly
landed the craft after a 30 minute flight at about 200 feet. |
Quote of the day: An extremely interesting experience. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
