Saturday,
February 6, 2016:
It was the 25th annual fishing contest on Gull lake, just north of Brainerd. Sponsored by the Brainerd Jaycees, it had $150,000 in prizes and brought an estimated one million dollars in business to the Lakes Area. |
Fishermen arrived in all kinds of outfits
with big smiles and big anticipation of winning it big. |
So, off the ramp
they stepped onto the ice of Gull Lake. Some were a bit
shy, but they got over it in a hurry. |
||
Yes, they marched onto the ice, all 10,000 of
them, with fishing tackle and bait. The fish didn't have a chance! |
|||
Depth sounders and all kinds of creature comforts
were there for the three hour contest. |
|||
Paula, on the far right, was there with her
cousin Bob (second from the left). The others were found at nearby fishing
holes. The man next to Paula later did very well. See him further down in this story. |
|||
You can always count on the Irish to show up at
an event like this. St. Patrick's Day is only 39 days away! |
|||
Fish and happy fishermen arrived at the weigh-in
station hardly two minutes after the starting horn. Some good size fish too. |
|||
These two whoppers were caught within a minute of
each other. Good going, guys! |
|||
Local Radio Station KBLB, known as
B93, was on hand
to report the details. |
|||
Fishing can be a bit high-tech with depth sounders, but it
still takes skill and a bit of luck. Unfortunately, luck was not with
Fisherwoman Paula that day. |
|||
Her fishing buddy, just ten feet away, was Shane
Lund of South Haven, Minnesota. He landed a 4.25 pound Walleye and took fourth place in the contest. |
|||
This lady is Becky Clarkin of Merrifield, Minnesota. Her son Mike is in the U.S. Air Force, a son Jeremy is in the U.S. Marines, and daughter in law Ashley in the U.S. Navy. Becky is a proud mother and a true American mother. |
|||
Just one-sixth of the contest as viewed from high
in a lift chair. |
|||
Yes, even people in a helicopter came to see an Alaskan
bushman representing
Alaska's Healing
Hearts. It is a non-profit organization helping wounded warriors. Mark gave them a thumbs-up for their effort. |
The temperatures were just
above freezing that day, but still cold enough to require
covering up. One man had an Alaskan Wolf hat. Another wore a Minnesota Fox. The lady was smart enough to get warmth from a dog. |
||
Plenty of street signs on the
ice so no one could complain of getting lost. |
Then at 3 pm it was all over. Fishermen
left vowing to return to catch the "big one" next year. |
Quote of the day: A fun day for everyone. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
