AirVenture at Oshkosh has a large area set aside for aircraft used by the military. This is a very patriotic area honoring those who have died in our nation's defense. Most of the planes shown were retired years ago, but are kept operational by collectors. |
Yankee Lady, a World War II B-17G Flying Fortress was there. She drew a huge crowd seeing her in the air and after landing. |
Swamp Fox, Old Crow, Gentlemen Jim, and more were
lined up. All of them North American P-51 Mustangs from WWII. |
A British Lancaster bomber was there from Canada. X-Terminator has four Rolls Royce Merlin engines and really growls.
Some North American B-25 Mitchell Bombers were at the show. Devil Dog is a U.S. Marine plane with plenty of guns.
One of the few remaining Boeing
B-29
Superfortress bombers were on hand for inspection. Everyone wanted to see her. |
One
B-25 Mitchell touted the Disabled American Veterans logo. Mark
liked the Panchito logo. |
Bad News is a Douglas A-1 Skyraider The design goes back to just after WWII when military planners asked for a ground support aircraft. What they got was a plane that could loiter for hours in the sky waiting to be called on to protect troops while giving the enemy heck!
Spooky was there, a ghost with a lightning bolt in hand. The plane is a Douglas DC-3/U.S. Military C-47 cargo plane converter to an aerial gun platform sporting multiple 6-barrel Gatling guns. Designed to support troops on the ground, it was used very successfully in Vietnam. |
A U.S. Air Force North
American
F-100 Super Sabre jet fighter was on display at the Warbirds in
Review area. This lady dressed and sang as she would in the 1960s or 70s at a USO (United Service Organization) show to the troops in Vietnam. |
Quote of the day: Wonderful entertainment. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
