Saturday,
May 2, 2015: The
Aerial
Bridge at Duluth, Minnesota, just before sunrise. |
Sunrise over Lake Superior at Duluth.
The orange/red color can be attributed to forest fires out west and in Canada. |
Then the Aerial Bridge opened to let the Spartan through. The captain of this mighty vessel made sure to steer a straight course. |
|
Then they proceeded out onto Lake Superior, observed
by birds. The lake is sometimes referred to as Gichigami, where the Edmond Fitzgerald sunk in 1975. |
The rocky shore of Lake Superior is a favorite
spot for photographers. Plenty to see and photograph. Cell phone cameras are getting more popular although they are hindered by small lenses. |
Spring is the smelting season on Lake Superior.
The Provider is often see bringing in
smelt. These tiny fish are caught by the thousands and make good eating at festivals. |
Mark and Paula headed to a hamfest in
Superior, Wisconsin, to buy, sell, and trade
amateur radio
equipment. The van at the left has five antennas plus the factory
installed radio antenna. Mark enjoyed seeing a Johnson Viking II transmitter from the 1960s. His first amateur radio transmitter was a used Johnson Viking I from 1950, made in Waseca, Minnesota. Mark was first licensed in 1963, some 52 years ago. His first license only allowed communications via Morse code and he still knows the code today. Mark was 16 at the time and ran the transmitter at 75 watts into a long wire antenna. He communicated with other hams around the Midwest. Today he talks to other hams world-wide. Amateur radio is a federally licensed hobby. Mark sports a Zenith Long Distance Radio Shirt nowadays at hamfests. |
Quote of the day: Fun to get together with friends at hamfests. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
