Wednesday,
January 14, 2015:
Mark and Paula
visited Viscaya Museum
and Gardens at Miami, Florida. The main house was started in 1913 by James Deering after a visit to Villa la Pietra in Italy. It was receiving guests in 1916, but the surrounding grounds were not completed until 1922. Deering made his money in International Harvester before retiring in 1908. Viscaya sits on the water's edge looking over the Atlantic Ocean. It was the scene of many lavish parties back in the 1920s. |
In front of the house is what looks to be a ship
made of stone. It is really an island created as a huge raft for
swimmers and parties. My, they lived well back then! |

south side. |

guests. |
Vizcaya is surrounded by gardens. It enjoys
very pleasant weather year round. |
The gardens are meticulously maintained by a full
time crew. The main
house is a museum. |
No expense was spared in the construction of Vizcaya. |
Quote of the day: Photography is not allowed in the main house so you'll have to go there to see it for yourself. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
