The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Sunday, September 7, 2014:
Mark and Paula headed to the south shore of Lake Superior to visit Pearl Swanstrom (shown next to Mark) in her apple orchard.  Pearl lives near the Persons' family cabin on the Poplar River.  Pearl's father came up with a gadget to harvest apples from trees many years ago where you cannot normally reach.  It is a wooden pole with a soup can.  Just push it up to put an apple in the can and then twist.  The apple drops in.  A very clever idea!  Paula, on the other hand, picked apples right from the tree.  Hmmm.. there is a story in the Bible about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden picking forbidden fruit!  Fortunately, Pearl was happy for the Dynamic Duo to take some, which they did.  Thanks, Pearl!  Tasty apples.

Not far away is the Davidson Windmill, which was in operation about 100 years ago milling locally grown grain.  There is a farmhouse nearby from that era too.
Yes, there is history all around us.

Then they were down to the famous Aerial Bridge to see the Paul R. Tregurtha, known as the Queen of the Lakes, come into port.
With 16,000 horsepower, she is over 1000 feet long and can carry 68,000 tons of cargo.  A mammoth ship to say the least.

The Aerial Bridge as seen from the north shore of lake superior several miles away.
Waves crashed on the shore as the sun played across the water.

Paula loves sitting on the shore watching boats go by.
She also spent time looking far agate rocks to bring home.

It is not uncommon to see people photographing and painting scenery on the north shore.

Leif Erickson Park honors the Norwegian explorer from about the year 1000.
Paula was more interested in exploring the flowers and taking photos.

Now that's a rose!
Good work, Paula.

Street fountains....a new thing at Canal Park.  Music is good there too.

Duluth's most famous landmark....the Aerial Bridge.  It is beautifully lit at night.

Quote of the day:  A perfect end to a great day.   Mark < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
