Friday, June 20, 2014:   As a part of History Week in Brainerd, there was a gathering of those interested in a bank robbery dating back to 1933.

The First National Bank building is now home of Design Consign, an antique shop at 6th and Laurel Streets in Brainerd.
Five men, including George "Baby Face" Nelson, robbed the bank on October 23, 1933, making off with $32,000 in cash.
That was a lot of money back then.   It is $572,000 in today's money.
One interesting thing the robbers did was to publically burn home mortgages, which they also found the the bank safe.  That made a lot of local folks happy.

Store owner Steve Foy displayed a wanted poster for the leader of the gang who was soon declared Public Enemy Number One by FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover.
This robber had may aliases including George Nelson, "Baby Face" Nelson, Alex Gillis, Lester Giles, "Big George" Nelson, "Jimmie", and Jimmie Williams.
He finally died in a gun battle with FBI agents on November 27, 1934, near Chicago.

Steve Foy is trying to put together a re-enactment of the bank robbery on October 23rd this year, the 81st anniversary of the robbery.
