The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Thursday, August 29, 2013:  Mark visited Fagen Fighters, a World War II museum, near Granite Falls, Minnesota.

Twilight Tear is a North American P51 Mustang.  Described by most as the best fighter of the war.  What made it work right was a British Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 engine fitted into an American airframe.  A classic example of "hands across the water" collaboration to win the war.

Twilight Tear is shown with drop-tanks that allowed the plane to escort B-17 and other bombers deep into the heart of Germany.

Rough Stuff is a Lockheed P-38 Lightning

With twin engines and plenty of firepower in the main body, it was an extremely formidable fighter.

P-38's fought in the European and Pacific theatres.

An Erco Ercoupe.  The design dates back to 1937.

In the background is a painting of P-40 Warhawks with the Flying Tigers in China at the beginning of World War II.

Mark likes nose art.

A clear story to the enemy.

An exceptionally well done display including expressions on soldier's faces.

They even have radio equipment from that era on the ground and in aircraft.

This place is an exceptionally well done museum of World War II history.

Highly recommended to all.

Quote of the day:  America's greatest generation.   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
