Saturday,
March 2, 2013: There was a gathering of private airplanes just
south of Garrison, Minnesota, on the shore of Mille Lacs Lake at the
Twin Pines Restaurant. It was a sunny day with temperatures in the high 20's and calm winds. About 50 airplanes landed on a plowed runway on the ice and parked near the shore. Lots of fun for everyone flying and for spectators driving by. |
One of those was Philip Mattson with his
Piper
Super Cub. The original airplane design goes back to 1949 and most are
painted their signature yellow color. This is a fun plane to fly
because it just feels right. Philip is President of Core Products in Osceola, Wisconsin, which is where he flew in from that day. He is a happy guy and shows it with his mustache. |
There
is good visibility from this airplane. Just what "seat of their
pants" flyers like. As a joke, Philip fashioned an animal fur
cover to keep the propeller of his airplane warm in cold weather.
The orange blanket over the engine is to do just that. It keeps the engine warm, which is great for a trip like this. |
Yes, they were starting the young ones early on the
path to be pilots someday too. Find out more about flying at: http://www.midwestflyer.com |
Quote of the day: Pilots and their families are fun people. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
